Season Auditions Announced

Dates and Times:
Sunday, April 3rd
1pm – 8pm
Washington, DC

Tuesday, April 5th
7pm – 10pm
Alexandria, VA

Submit: To be considered for a slot, please send your electronic headshot and resume to auditions@bravespiritstheatre.com. If possible, please send in a single pdf file entitled Lastname_Firstname_2016. Please also include your availability/preference for the two audition dates. We regret that we are unable to see all actors who submit. If you are not available for our audition dates, we will accept video submissions.

Prepare: Two contrasting monologues from Shakespeare and/or his contemporaries. At least one of these monologues must be in verse (iambic pentameter). Your two monologues performed together should not exceed two and a half minutes. You may be given an adjustment on one of your monologues. You may also choose to sing and/or play an instrument for no more than thirty seconds. Please bring two headshots and resumes. You are welcome to perform monologues by characters whose gender does not match your own. You are also encouraged to make eye contact with us if you feel it is appropriate for your piece.

Brave Spirits Theatre employs non-traditional casting. We are especially interested in seeing minority actors, and we use cross-gender casting and re-gendering in order to increase opportunities for women. Our rehearsal process requires textual analysis such as scansion, paraphrasing, and rhetorical devices.

Callbacks for all productions will be held in May at which time the performance schedule will finalized. Please feel free to email us if you have any questions about the schedule. We consider this an open, general call, so even if you are unsure about your availability, please feel free to still audition.

Performances and most rehearsals occur at Convergence in Alexandria, VA. All actors are paid a stipend. We will consider AEA actors for the role of Antony, possibly under a special appearance contract. All actors will also be asked to participate in three company training days over the summer on the topics of verse and rhetoric, audience contact, and Viewpoints.

Season:

Antony and Cleopatra
by William Shakespeare
directed by Charlene V. Smith
Fall 2016

Brave Spirits tackles Shakespeare’s epic story of two lovers torn between their passion for each other and their duties to their countries. BST Artistic Associate Jessica Lefkow stars as Cleopatra. All other roles are available. For this production, we are especially interested in actors with movement experience and training as the rehearsal process will be based in Viewpoints and Chekhov.

Most likely, rehearsals will start at the beginning of August and performances will take place in September.

‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore
by John Ford
directed by Charlene V. Smith
In repertory with
A King and No King
by Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher
directed by Cassie Ash
Spring 2017

Our season repertory continues the theme of dangerous love with two couples defying the greatest of all taboos: the fact that they are brother and sister. In both plays, incestuous passion overcomes reason, but to very different results. Brave Spirits is excited to pair Ford’s gruesome tragedy with Beaumont and Fletcher’s almost unknown tragicomedy. Seeking versatile actors who can play both comic and dramatic roles. All actors will be cast in both productions.

Rehearsals will most likely start around the beginning of February for performances in April.
